The plan to avoid their glider being tracked was, as far as Kaira understood it, simple enough. They would be launching at the same time as a number of ordinary flights, aiming to lose themselves amongst the crowd.

That made it almost impossible for the authorities to even tell if everyone had a beacon on, and certainly meant they would be able to slip away without being tracked visually. When Tarkus had asked why the authorities didn’t insist each glider launch individually, Marak smiled.

“All glider pilots are free spirits,” he said. “It comes with the territory. The authorities have tried to insist on individual launches a few times, but it never works out. There are always miscommunications on who will launch when, and some pilots accidentally launching too soon.

“Not many of us ever try to fly to the other tower, but plenty of us enjoy slipping away from the limited areas we’re legally allowed to fly in. We live for the true freedom of soaring wherever we want to. To do that, you need to launch without beacons. And to do that you need to ensure everyone launches together.”

“And, of course, some of those in charge make use of the ability to smuggle things from one tower to the other?” asked Tarkus.

“Yes. There is that.”

Soon the three of them were strapped into one of the gliders. Only then did Kaira appreciate just how fragile the craft seemed. Her stomach started to churn. As Marak counted down the minutes till they would launch, starting at five, she became increasingly glad they hadn't had the chance to eat any food. And that was before they’d even launched!
